What's Happening?
The U.S. Space Force has successfully launched the final satellite of the GPS III system, marking the completion of a decades-long upgrade to the global positioning system. The satellite, known as SV-10, was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from
Cape Canaveral, Florida. This new satellite offers position data that is three times more accurate and eight times more resistant to jamming compared to its predecessors. The upgrade is significant for both civilian and military applications, providing more precise navigation for everyday activities and enhanced targeting and communication capabilities for military operations. The GPS III system, approved by Congress in 2000, represents a significant advancement in satellite technology, with the next generation, GPS IIIF, already in development and expected to launch in 2027.
