What's Happening?
Air Liquide South Africa, in collaboration with the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the Localisation Support Fund (LSF), has launched the Wits-South Africa Hydrogen Localisation Initiative (Wits-SAHLI). The initiative, supported by a R100 million
investment from Air Liquide, aims to establish a modular pilot hydrogen plant on Wits' West Campus in Johannesburg. This facility will focus on applied research, teaching, and testing hydrogen applications, providing a platform for industry partners to explore hydrogen solutions. The plant will use a 110 kW electrolyser to produce low-carbon hydrogen from water and renewable electricity, with a storage capacity of 200 kg. The initiative is part of Air Liquide's broader investment strategy to support South Africa's transition to a low-carbon hydrogen economy.
Why It's Important?
The Wits-SAHLI initiative is significant as it represents a major step towards South Africa's energy transition and decarbonization goals. By investing in hydrogen technology, the initiative aims to build local expertise and research capacity, which is crucial for the country's shift to a low-carbon economy. This project not only supports environmental goals but also has the potential to stimulate economic growth by creating a competitive local supply chain for the hydrogen sector. The involvement of high-level government officials, such as Deputy President Paul Mashatile, underscores the initiative's importance and the government's commitment to supporting sustainable energy solutions.
What's Next?
The Wits-SAHLI initiative is expected to be operational by 2028. In the meantime, efforts will focus on streamlining the permitting and regulation processes to expedite the project's start date. Air Liquide plans to leverage its global hydrogen expertise and high-level partnerships to accelerate the initiative. The project aims to empower South African companies and foster inclusive growth by building a local workforce and supplier network. As the hydrogen economy grows, the initiative will play a key role in ensuring that South Africa is well-positioned to lead in the global green economy.
