What's Happening?
A Consumer Reports investigation has uncovered safety concerns with squishy gel fidget toys, popular among children for stress relief. The investigation found that some of these toys can break open, exposing
a gel that may irritate skin or cause chemical burns. Reports on SaferProducts.gov indicate that children have suffered severe skin irritation from these toys. Consumer Reports tested several toys, finding that one, the Nee-Doh 'Groovy Glob,' had a pH level as acidic as lemon juice, posing a risk of chemical burns. The manufacturer, Schylling, disputes these findings, claiming the gel is safe. Additionally, a TikTok trend encouraging microwaving these toys has been deemed dangerous, as it can cause the toys to explode.
Why It's Important?
The findings from Consumer Reports raise significant safety concerns for parents and guardians, highlighting the need for caution when purchasing toys for children. The potential for chemical burns and skin irritation underscores the importance of transparency in product ingredients and safety testing. This investigation may prompt regulatory bodies to enforce stricter safety standards and labeling requirements for toys. The situation also serves as a reminder of the influence of social media trends on consumer behavior, emphasizing the need for awareness and education about product safety.
