What's Happening?
Nigeria is seeking to enhance its political, economic, and security engagement with countries in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin. This initiative was announced by Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, during a high-level
retreat in Maiduguri, Borno State. The retreat, themed 'Strengthening Nigeria’s Engagement with the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin Countries: Towards Peace, Security and Sustainable Regional Development,' gathered Nigerian ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from the Sahel region. The focus is on developing a Sahel Development Compact aimed at shifting the regional narrative from crisis management to sustainable development. The proposed framework will address infrastructure, agriculture, trade, energy, education, and climate resilience, among other areas. Enikanolaiye emphasized the importance of mending political and diplomatic relations with the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

The retreat is expected to produce the Maiduguri Roadmap for Nigeria’s continued engagement with the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin countries. This roadmap will cover political dialogue, security cooperation, economic integration, and humanitarian collaboration. It will also propose regular high-level bilateral visits and sectoral working groups to ensure the implementation of the retreat’s resolutions. The success of this initiative will depend on the commitment of regional stakeholders to collaborate on shared challenges and opportunities.
