What's Happening?
A coalition of financial institutions, including Navy Federal Credit Union, PenFed Credit Union, and USAA, in partnership with Blue Star Families and the D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families, has released findings from a three-year study
on military spouse employment. The study, presented at the Military Spouse Employment Summit in Washington, D.C., highlights persistent employment challenges faced by military spouses, such as high unemployment rates and underemployment despite high educational attainment. The research identifies systemic barriers like frequent relocations and limited workplace flexibility that hinder career progression. The coalition has also developed a Corporate Employer Playbook, offering strategies for organizations to better support military spouse employment through mentorship, work flexibility, and career portability.
Why It's Important?
The high unemployment rate among military spouses, which has remained above 20% for over a decade, poses significant challenges not only to the individuals affected but also to military readiness and family stability. Military spouses often possess advanced degrees and valuable skills, yet face systemic barriers that prevent them from achieving stable employment. By addressing these issues, the coalition aims to enhance the financial security and well-being of military families, which is crucial for maintaining morale and readiness within the armed forces. The initiative also highlights the importance of cross-sector collaboration in creating sustainable employment solutions, potentially setting a precedent for addressing similar employment challenges in other sectors.
What's Next?
The coalition is encouraging more organizations to adopt the evidence-based strategies outlined in the Corporate Employer Playbook. They are also promoting the 4+1 Commitment, a pledge to implement practices that make careers more adaptable to the unique challenges faced by military spouses. This initiative aims to foster a broader ecosystem of change, involving employers, policymakers, and community partners in efforts to improve employment outcomes for military spouses. Continued collaboration and commitment from these stakeholders will be essential in driving systemic change and ensuring that military spouses can achieve long-term career success.
