What's Happening?
Zhang Han, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasized the unstoppable nature of exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait, despite recent tensions. At a press briefing, Zhang highlighted the strong complementarity between
the industrial structures of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, citing trade figures that show significant growth in cross-Strait trade. In the first half of 2026, trade reached $185 billion, with mainland imports from Taiwan increasing by 22.5% and exports to Taiwan growing by 32.9%. Zhang reiterated that expanding economic and trade cooperation serves the shared interests of businesses and people on both sides, aligning with economic laws and market principles.
Why It's Important?
The assertion of unstoppable cross-Strait cooperation by the Chinese mainland is significant as it underscores the economic interdependence between China and Taiwan, despite political tensions. This economic relationship is crucial for both sides, as it supports industries and contributes to regional stability. However, the political implications of such cooperation are complex, as it may be perceived as a means for China to exert influence over Taiwan. For the U.S. and its allies, maintaining a balance between supporting Taiwan's autonomy and engaging with China economically is a delicate diplomatic challenge.
