Indonesia's Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) has submitted a 21-page draft decree to the World Trade Organization (WTO), outlining formal halal requirements for genetically modified (GM) food imports. This move signifies Indonesia's commitment
to ensuring the halal quality of all food products within its ecosystem. The decree details the implementation of the Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH) for Genetically Modified Products, which will cover the entire production chain, from ingredients and processing to storage, distribution, and presentation to consumers. Head of BPJPH Ahmad Haikal Hasan emphasized that a continuous system is required to guarantee the halal status of GM products, given that genetic engineering involves the manipulation of organisms and materials that necessitate in-depth halal verification. The SJPH guidelines for GM products include general requirements, such as appointing certified halal supervisors, and specific food business requirements, like effective recall measures for products proven to cause negative impacts. The draft also clarifies rules for microorganisms used in food production, stating that GM microorganisms or products derived from them using pork as a growth medium are considered haram, unless the microbes can be separated and purified. Additionally, microbial materials must not contain genes from pigs or humans, and master seed storage must use halal media.
