What's Happening?
The egg industry is pressing the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to expedite the approval and implementation of a vaccination program to combat highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). During a joint executive conference of the American Egg Board
and United Egg Producers in Louisville, industry leaders highlighted the urgent need for a vaccine to protect laying hens and turkeys. The proposed vaccination would involve administering two doses, one at one day old and another between 7 to 15 weeks later. The focus would be on areas most vulnerable to HPAI, particularly the four major wild bird migratory flyways, including the Mississippi flyway. The industry has already invested heavily in biosecurity measures since the 2014-15 outbreak, which resulted in the loss of 42 million birds. Despite these efforts, HPAI has continued to affect nearly all 50 states, with 41.4 million laying hens lost in 2025 alone.
Why It's Important?
The ongoing HPAI outbreaks pose a significant threat to the U.S. egg industry, impacting both production and economic stability. The loss of millions of birds not only affects supply but also drives up costs for producers and consumers. Implementing a vaccination program could mitigate these losses and stabilize the industry. However, international trade complications arise, as some countries refuse imports from nations that vaccinate for HPAI. This presents a challenge for the U.S., which exports a portion of its egg production. The industry's call for swift action underscores the need for a balanced approach that addresses both domestic production concerns and international trade implications.
What's Next?
The USDA has yet to announce a timeline for the vaccination program, leaving the industry in a state of uncertainty. As outbreaks continue, the pressure mounts for the USDA to act swiftly. Industry leaders are likely to continue advocating for expedited approval processes and collaboration with state veterinarians to implement the vaccination strategy. The outcome of these efforts will significantly influence the industry's ability to manage HPAI and maintain production levels.
