What's Happening?
The Department of Agriculture in Poonch organized a district-level mega workshop aimed at educating and sensitizing youth under the Jammu & Kashmir Climate Investment Project (JKCIP). The event, part of the Annual Work Plan and Budget 2025-26, saw participation
from 250 individuals, including Krishi Udhyamis, youth clubs, self-help groups, and farmers. District Development Commissioner Ashok Sharma, who presided over the event, emphasized the role of youth in nation-building and encouraged them to become job creators through modern agricultural practices. Chief Agriculture Officer Jograj Singh Slathia highlighted the importance of youth engagement in agriculture, focusing on innovation and sustainable practices like hydroponics and precision farming. The workshop also included presentations from various district officers and the release of a booklet on JKCIP.

This workshop is significant as it aims to empower young entrepreneurs in the agriculture sector, promoting sustainable livelihoods and encouraging innovation. By focusing on climate-resilient and market-oriented practices, the initiative seeks to transform the agricultural landscape in Poonch, making it more sustainable and economically viable. The involvement of youth is crucial as they are seen as change agents who can drive community development and environmental awareness. The JKCIP project, by integrating digital tools and sustainable practices, aims to create a forward-looking agricultural ecosystem that can address challenges like climate change and market demands.
What's Next?
The JKCIP project will continue its implementation in selected blocks of Poonch, covering thousands of households, including women and vulnerable communities. The focus will be on promoting local specialties like Mandi–Loran Rajmash and encouraging practices such as mushroom cultivation and beekeeping. Youth clubs and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) are expected to play a significant role in marketing local produce and promoting online services. The project aims to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth, potentially leading to increased economic opportunities and sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
