What's Happening?
NHS Wales has initiated the 'Help Us to Help You' campaign to encourage the use of community pharmacies for common winter illnesses. Launched on November 1, 2025, the campaign utilizes TV, radio, and social
media to promote the common ailments service available in community pharmacies. This service allows pharmacists to treat 28 common conditions, such as sore throats, skin rashes, and urinary tract infections, providing an accessible alternative to GP surgeries and emergency departments. Health Secretary Jeremy Miles emphasized the role of pharmacists as highly qualified professionals who can offer confidential advice and treatment, thus helping to reduce the burden on GPs and emergency services. The campaign follows the success of the 'Choose Pharmacy' minor ailments service, which began in 2020 and expanded in 2021 to include independent prescribing by pharmacists.
Why It's Important?
The campaign is significant as it aims to ease the pressure on the NHS during the busy winter months by redirecting patients with minor ailments to community pharmacies. This approach not only provides a convenient option for patients but also allows GPs and emergency departments to focus on more urgent cases. The initiative highlights the evolving role of pharmacists in healthcare, showcasing their ability to manage a wider range of conditions independently. By promoting the use of pharmacies, the NHS can potentially reduce wait times and improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery. The campaign also underscores the importance of accessible healthcare services, which can lead to better health outcomes and patient satisfaction.
What's Next?
As the campaign progresses, it is expected that more patients will utilize pharmacy services for minor ailments, potentially leading to a decrease in the number of visits to GP surgeries and emergency departments. The success of this initiative could pave the way for further expansion of pharmacy services, including more comprehensive prescribing capabilities. Stakeholders, including Community Pharmacy Wales, are committed to supporting the campaign, with funding allocated in the 2025/2026 community pharmacy contractual framework. The outcome of this campaign may influence future healthcare policies and funding decisions, emphasizing the role of pharmacies in the broader healthcare system.
