What's Happening?
Primark, a prominent fashion retailer, has inaugurated its first store in the Middle East, located at Grand Plaza, The Avenues in Kuwait. This marks a significant step in Primark's international expansion strategy. The store, which spans over 60,000 square
feet and employs 350 staff, is a result of a partnership with Alshaya Group, a leading retail franchise operator in the region. This opening is Primark's first franchise store and its 18th international market entry. The store offers a comprehensive range of products, including collaborations with brands like Disney. Primark plans further expansion in the Middle East, with three additional stores set to open in Dubai in 2026.
Why It's Important?
Primark's entry into the Middle East signifies a strategic move to tap into a new market with significant growth potential. The partnership with Alshaya Group leverages local expertise, enhancing Primark's ability to cater to regional consumer preferences. This expansion is part of Primark's broader global growth strategy, which includes a decade-long presence in the U.S. and plans for a flagship store in Manhattan. The move could intensify competition in the Middle Eastern retail sector, potentially impacting local and international retailers operating in the region.
What's Next?
Following the successful launch in Kuwait, Primark and Alshaya Group are set to open three more stores in Dubai by mid-2026. The first of these will be in Dubai Mall, followed by City Centre Mirdif and Mall of the Emirates. The partners are also exploring further expansion opportunities across the Middle East, indicating a sustained commitment to growing their presence in the region.
