What's Happening?
The U.S. Air Force has assumed control of the Pentagon's Military GPS User Equipment (MGUE) program, previously managed by the Space Force. This organizational shift, announced on July 23, aims to address long-standing technical setbacks and delays in deploying
jam-resistant GPS receivers across military platforms. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center will now oversee the development, integration, and maintenance of equipment capable of receiving the M-code, an encrypted military GPS signal. This move is intended to streamline the process of integrating these receivers into military aircraft, ships, vehicles, and weapons, which has been hindered by divided responsibilities and technical challenges. The MGUE program, initiated in the late 1990s, has faced issues with coordinating receiver development and platform integration, leading to significant delays.
