Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon has introduced a new overhead fast-charging system for electric vehicle (EV) rental fleets. This ChargePoint system allows up to 20 rental EVs to be charged simultaneously without occupying valuable floor
space. The installation at PDX’s Quick Turnaround Facility (QTA) includes 10 dual-port fast-chargers, each rated at 200 kW. These chargers are mounted above the vehicles, featuring retractable cables that operators can pull down for use. This design keeps charging equipment and cables out of the path of rental cars, facilitating smoother operations and providing more room for staff to maneuver. Jeremiah Hartley, airport rental car manager at Portland International Airport, noted that this innovative system helped save on installation costs by reducing the need for extensive conduit and wiring, while also protecting against potential damage from vehicles in the QTA.
