What's Happening?
IHG Hotels & Resorts has announced the commencement of its largest new-build hotel project in Japan, located near Universal Studios Japan in Osaka. The project, in partnership with Sakurajima Kaihatsu
LLC, marks IHG's first triple-branded hotel development in the country. The development will feature InterContinental, Kimpton, and Holiday Inn Resort hotels, totaling 817 rooms. These hotels will be the only internationally branded properties in the area and are expected to open in 2029. The project is strategically located near Asia's most visited theme park and is part of a broader infrastructure development in the region, including the extension of the JR Sakurajima Line and new ferry terminals.
Why It's Important?
This development represents a significant investment in Japan's hospitality sector, particularly in Osaka, a major tourist destination. The project is expected to boost local tourism and provide a substantial economic impact through job creation and increased visitor spending. It also underscores IHG's commitment to expanding its presence in Asia, leveraging the popularity of Universal Studios Japan to attract international tourists. The introduction of internationally branded hotels in the area could enhance the region's appeal as a global tourist destination, potentially increasing competition among local hospitality providers.
What's Next?
As construction progresses, the project will likely attract attention from both domestic and international investors, potentially leading to further developments in the area. The opening of these hotels in 2029 will coincide with other infrastructure improvements, enhancing accessibility and convenience for tourists. This could lead to increased visitor numbers to Universal Studios Japan and the surrounding region. Additionally, the success of this project may encourage other international hotel chains to consider similar developments in Japan, further boosting the country's tourism industry.
