What's Happening?
In Niteroi, Brazil, an aerial circus performance titled 'Alone we are petals, together we are roses' was held to raise awareness about violence against women. The show, performed by the group 'Pendurados,'
featured six women and two men and took place on Icarai Beach. The performance depicted a narrative of overcoming gender-based violence through art and community support. Juliana Berti Abduch, who founded the Suspended Circus Acrobatics project in 2020, aims to address and combat various forms of violence through these performances. The project provides a therapeutic outlet for artists who have experienced gender-based violence, helping them regain confidence and strength.
Why It's Important?
This performance sheds light on the pervasive issue of gender-based violence in Brazil, where over one-third of women have experienced such violence. The circus serves as both a form of artistic expression and a platform for social change, encouraging dialogue and awareness. By highlighting the strength and resilience of survivors, the performance aims to inspire societal change and support for victims. The initiative also underscores the role of art in healing and empowerment, offering a unique approach to addressing social issues.
