What's Happening?
Kentucky Proud is promoting its Virtual Spring Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Week from February 16-20. This initiative aims to connect consumers with local farms through subscription-based food packages. The event, organized by the Kentucky Department
of Agriculture, highlights the benefits of purchasing directly from local farmers. The CSA model allows consumers to buy shares or subscriptions from farms, receiving regular distributions of seasonal products such as vegetables, fruits, eggs, meats, herbs, and flowers. This year, more than 66 farms are participating, the largest number to date. The event is supported by the Center for Crop Diversification, The Food Connection at the University of Kentucky, the Kentucky Horticulture Council, and the Organic Association of Kentucky.
Why It's Important?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs play a crucial role in supporting local economies by keeping food dollars within the community and providing consumers with access to fresh, locally grown produce. This initiative not only benefits consumers by offering fresh and diverse food options but also supports farmers by providing them with a stable income and reducing financial risks. By promoting CSA Week, Kentucky Proud is encouraging sustainable agricultural practices and strengthening the connection between consumers and local food producers, which is vital for the resilience of local food systems.
What's Next?
Consumers interested in participating in CSA programs can learn more by visiting the Kentucky Proud CSA Week Facebook group. The continued promotion of CSA programs is expected to increase consumer awareness and participation, further supporting local agriculture. As more consumers engage with CSA programs, there may be increased opportunities for farmers to expand their offerings and for communities to benefit from enhanced food security and sustainability.
