What's Happening?
A recent cyberattack on Poland's power grid, attributed to Russian threat actors, has resulted in significant damage to industrial control systems (ICS) across approximately 30 sites. According to industrial cybersecurity firm Dragos, the attack targeted
communication and control systems, particularly at combined heat and power plants and renewable energy dispatch centers. The attackers, identified as the Sandworm group by ESET, deployed wiper malware, leading to some ICS devices being permanently damaged or 'bricked'. Despite the severity of the attack, it did not cause electrical outages, as the systems continued to operate in their last known state. Dragos has linked the attack to a group it tracks as Electrum, which is related to Sandworm. The attack appears to have been opportunistic and rushed, lacking the coordinated sequencing seen in previous attacks on Ukraine's power grid.
