What's Happening?
Odessa, Ukraine, is projected to face an acute shortage of drinking water within 10-15 years if proactive measures are not taken. Serhiy Sukhomlyn, head of the State Agency for Infrastructure Restoration and Development of Ukraine, highlighted this impending
crisis. To address this, a main pipeline route from Odessa to Reni is currently under development, with the aim of drawing water from the Danube River mouth to supply Odessa and potentially Kherson. The State Agency is actively collaborating with the World Bank on a feasibility study for the construction of this large-scale pipeline. Sukhomlyn believes that such a project could not only secure Odessa's water supply but also significantly boost the development of the entire region, including expanding land irrigation to increase crop yields and creating conditions for new settlements.
