What's Happening?
Meta has released the third generation of its SAM series, AI models focused on visual intelligence, which are being used in wildlife conservation research. These models excel at object detection and have been trained on a large dataset of images and videos.
Meta partnered with ConservationX and Osa Conservation to analyze video footage from over 10,000 cameras, capturing over 100 species. The SAM 3 models help identify animals in the footage, supporting conservation efforts. These models are also being used to improve content editing tools across Meta's platforms, enhancing precision in applications like Instagram Edits and Facebook Marketplace.
Why It's Important?
The application of Meta's SAM models in wildlife conservation highlights the potential of AI to contribute to environmental protection. By accurately identifying and analyzing wildlife, these models can provide valuable data for conservationists, aiding in the preservation of biodiversity. The integration of AI in conservation efforts demonstrates a growing trend of using technology to address environmental challenges. Additionally, the improvements in content editing tools on Meta's platforms showcase the versatility of AI in enhancing user experiences and operational efficiency.
