What's Happening?
The Ballmer Group has donated $110 million to UCLA, Cal State L.A., and Cal State Dominguez Hills to expand mental health programs and train more students in social work and counseling. This funding aims to address the significant shortage of mental health professionals
in California, particularly in underserved areas like South and East Los Angeles. The donation will provide financial assistance and clinical resources to students, helping to reduce the cost of obtaining a master's degree in social work. The initiative is expected to prepare a new generation of counselors and social workers who reflect and understand the communities they serve.
Why It's Important?
This substantial donation is a critical step in addressing the mental health professional shortage in California, where 55 out of 58 counties face deficits in mental health services.
