What's Happening?
MidCity Excellence, a youth academy in St. Joseph, Missouri, has been awarded a $50,000 grant by Buchanan County to expand its 'Kidz Biz' program. This initiative is designed to provide hands-on entrepreneurship
opportunities for young people, helping them develop into career-ready individuals. The program involves professionals, community mentors, and college students who work with participants to teach them valuable business skills such as financial planning, marketing, and product presentation. The 'Kidz Biz' program also includes a food truck operated by the academy, where students gain real-world business experience by taking orders, preparing food, and honing skills like problem-solving and teamwork. The program aims to provide a positive and engaging outlet for teenagers, reducing the risk of them engaging in risky behaviors.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of the 'Kidz Biz' program is significant as it addresses the need for practical workforce development among youth, particularly in underserved communities. By equipping young people with essential business skills and real-world experience, the program helps prepare them for future employment opportunities and encourages entrepreneurial thinking. This initiative not only benefits the participants by enhancing their career prospects but also contributes to the local economy by fostering a new generation of skilled workers and potential business leaders. Additionally, the program's focus on financial literacy and wealth creation is crucial in promoting long-term economic stability for individuals and communities.
What's Next?
MidCity Excellence plans to continue expanding its 'Kidz Biz' program with the support of the recent grant. The next major event for the academy is the 12th annual MLK Jr. Solutions Summit, scheduled for January 19 at the Word of Life Church. This event will likely provide further opportunities for students to showcase their skills and engage with the community. As the program grows, it may attract additional funding and partnerships, enabling it to reach more young people and further enhance its offerings. Stakeholders, including local businesses and educational institutions, may also become more involved, providing additional resources and mentorship to participants.
