What's Happening?
The USC Gould School of Law has been awarded a $5 million donation from the Gilbert family to create the Donna and Spencer Gilbert Global Justice and Human Rights Center. This new academic hub aims to train future human rights lawyers and enhance experiential
learning in international law. The center will engage students, scholars, and practitioners in education, research, and policy work focused on advancing human rights globally. Under the leadership of Professor Hannah Garry, the center will serve as a focal point for student training and faculty research in human rights law. It will include the International Human Rights Clinic, which places students in real-world cases, and a new Justice and Accountability Initiative focused on documenting war crimes and strategic litigation.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the Global Justice and Human Rights Center at USC Gould is significant as it addresses the growing demand for lawyers trained in international criminal law and human rights. This initiative will not only enhance the educational experience for law students but also contribute to global justice advocacy. By preparing future human rights lawyers and leaders, the center aims to advance critical thought leadership and shape policies that promote prevention, accountability, and transitional justice. The center's programs, including a distinguished lecture series and partnerships with global organizations, will provide students with valuable opportunities to engage in international criminal justice and refugee protection.
What's Next?
The center will offer new programming, including a human rights fellowship and a summer program affiliated with the Howard A. Kaiman 'Nuremberg to The Hague' summer abroad program. This will allow students to study historical and modern international criminal justice at significant sites in Poland and Germany. The center's initiatives are expected to further distinguish USC Gould as a leading institution for students pursuing careers in international human rights and global justice. The Gilbert family's vision is to empower future generations of lawyers and scholars to champion human rights worldwide, contributing to a more peaceful and just world.
