What's Happening?
The Swiss Drone and Robotics Centre (SDRC) is collaborating with Skysec, a Swiss unmanned aircraft system manufacturer, to develop the non-kinetic Sentinel Catch interceptor. This innovative device uses a net as its payload to capture drones, minimizing
collateral damage. The development, ongoing since 2021, was highlighted at the International Armoured Vehicles (IAV) 2026 conference. The interceptor is designed to address the growing need for effective counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS), particularly around sensitive areas like airports. The SDRC aims to present various use cases to the Swiss Armed Forces, who will determine its deployment strategies.
Why It's Important?
The development of the Sentinel Catch interceptor is crucial in the context of increasing drone incursions and airspace violations, as highlighted by recent NATO warnings to Russia. The interceptor's non-kinetic approach offers a safer alternative to traditional methods, reducing the risk of damage or injury in populated areas. This technology could significantly enhance airspace security, particularly in urban environments and around critical infrastructure. The collaboration between SDRC and Skysec exemplifies the growing emphasis on innovative solutions in defense technology, reflecting broader trends in military and civilian security measures.
