What's Happening?
The Department of State has announced a temporary final rule that introduces a $750 fee for expedited B1/B2 visa interview appointments. This new fee is part of a pilot program designed to allow business and tourism visa applicants to secure interview appointments within
10 business days at selected overseas posts. The program, effective from July 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026, aims to accommodate up to 25,000 expedited requests. The fee is an optional addition to the standard visa application process and does not replace existing no-cost mechanisms for urgent travel needs. The expedited service is limited in availability and does not guarantee visa issuance, as applicants must still meet all standard eligibility and processing requirements.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it addresses the long wait times for nonimmigrant visa appointments, which can exceed 12 months at some embassies and consulates. By offering an expedited option, the Department of State aims to facilitate urgent travel plans, particularly in light of upcoming major events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The program could potentially benefit U.S. tourism and business sectors by enabling quicker access for international visitors. However, the limited availability of expedited appointments means that not all applicants will be able to take advantage of this service, and the impact on overall visa processing times remains to be seen.
What's Next?
As the pilot program rolls out, the Department of State will likely monitor its effectiveness and gather feedback to determine whether to extend or modify the program beyond 2026. Stakeholders, including travel and tourism industries, may advocate for broader implementation if the program proves successful in reducing wait times. Additionally, the Department may consider expanding the number of participating posts or increasing the capacity for expedited requests based on demand and operational feasibility.
