What's Happening?
The European Union (EU) is updating its flight delay compensation rules, known as EC261, which are considered some of the most consumer-friendly in the world. These rules entitle passengers to compensation ranging from €250 to €600 for significant flight delays
or cancellations. Despite initial discussions suggesting potential reductions in compensation and increased delay thresholds, the EU has decided to maintain the current compensation levels. Additionally, new consumer-friendly measures are being introduced, such as requiring airlines to inform passengers of their compensation eligibility within 48 hours of a flight disruption and providing reasons for any disruptions. These changes are expected to be approved by the EU's conciliation committee by June 15, 2026.
