What's Happening?
A new cyberdeck, named B.L.O.O.M. (Bridging Local Observations, Openly Mapped), has been developed by creative technologist Jen Looper, integrating the 'cottagecore' aesthetic with advanced technology for fieldwork. Unlike traditional cyberdecks that
often feature a rugged, '80s cassette futurism look, B.L.O.O.M. is housed in a vintage 'train case' typically used for cosmetics. This design choice reflects the cottagecore subculture's emphasis on cozy, rustic vibes and 'slow living.' The device is equipped with an Arduino UNO Q (4GB), a 5-inch HDMI screen, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, a power bank, a USB camera, and a USB microphone. It is specifically designed for collecting field notes on regional plants and animals, drawing inspiration from the detailed logging practices of Victorian naturalists. The cyberdeck connects to a companion app, Field Notes, to compile data in the Grinnell format and can run local AI models directly on the UNO Q. For instance, Looper utilized Edge Impulse integration in Arduino App Lab to create an AI model capable of recognizing avian species based on their birdsong.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it demonstrates a novel approach to integrating technology with aesthetic and lifestyle movements, potentially broadening the appeal and application of cyberdecks beyond their traditional user base. The B.L.O.O.M. cyberdeck highlights how personalized technology can cater to niche interests, such as nature observation and 'slow living,' by offering tools that are both functional and aesthetically aligned with user preferences. The use of local AI models for tasks like birdsong recognition showcases the increasing accessibility and versatility of artificial intelligence for specialized data collection in the field. This could empower citizen scientists, environmental researchers, and hobbyists with advanced tools that are user-friendly and portable, fostering greater engagement in ecological monitoring and data compilation. Furthermore, the project challenges conventional notions of technological design, proving that high-tech devices can adopt diverse forms and aesthetics, moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach.
What's Next?
The B.L.O.O.M. cyberdeck's innovative design and functionality could inspire further development in personalized and aesthetically driven technological tools for various fields. Future iterations might explore additional AI models for other forms of data collection, such as plant identification through image recognition or environmental sensor data analysis. The success of this cottagecore-inspired device may also encourage other designers and technologists to integrate popular aesthetic trends into their creations, leading to a more diverse range of tech products that cater to specific subcultures and lifestyles. There is potential for educational workshops or open-source projects to emerge, allowing more individuals to build and customize their own field-ready cyberdecks, further democratizing access to advanced data collection and AI capabilities for nature enthusiasts and researchers alike. The project could also influence the broader cyberdeck community to experiment with non-traditional enclosures and materials, pushing the boundaries of what a cyberdeck can look like and do.
Beyond the Headlines
The B.L.O.O.M. cyberdeck represents a deeper cultural shift towards integrating technology seamlessly into personal values and aesthetics, rather than viewing it as a purely utilitarian tool. The 'cottagecore' influence, with its emphasis on sustainability and a return to simpler, nature-focused living, suggests a growing desire for technology that supports these values. This project subtly critiques the often-impersonal and mass-produced nature of modern electronics by offering a handmade, personalized alternative. It highlights the ethical dimension of technology design, where tools can be crafted to enhance human connection with nature and promote mindful engagement with the environment. The blend of Victorian naturalist practices with modern AI also speaks to a cyclical view of progress, where historical methods are re-envisioned and augmented by contemporary innovations, fostering a sense of continuity and respect for past knowledge in the pursuit of future understanding. This approach could lead to more thoughtful and human-centered technological advancements.
