What's Happening?
ClassNK has released the third edition of its 'FAQs on the EU-ETS for Shipping' and the fifth edition of 'FAQs on the FuelEU Maritime.' These documents are designed to assist stakeholders in the maritime industry in understanding and complying with new
environmental regulations. The EU Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS) was expanded to include the maritime sector in 2023, with enforcement beginning on January 1, 2024. Additionally, the FuelEU Maritime regulation, which promotes the decarbonization of fuels used on ships, came into effect in October 2023 and has been enforced since January 1, 2025. These regulations apply to all ships over 5,000 gross tonnage that call at EU ports. The FAQs provide guidance on using measured methane slip emission factors instead of default values for LNG-fueled ships, following guidelines issued by the European Commission in October 2025.
Why It's Important?
The release of these FAQs is significant as it provides crucial guidance for the maritime industry, which is now subject to stringent environmental regulations under the EU-ETS and FuelEU Maritime. These regulations aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships, a major contributor to global emissions. By offering detailed procedures for compliance, ClassNK helps shipping companies navigate these complex regulations, potentially reducing their environmental impact and avoiding penalties. This move is part of a broader push towards sustainability in the maritime sector, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. Stakeholders in the industry, including ship owners and operators, stand to benefit from reduced emissions and improved regulatory compliance.
What's Next?
As the maritime industry adapts to these new regulations, stakeholders will likely continue to seek guidance and support from organizations like ClassNK. The implementation of these regulations may lead to increased investment in cleaner technologies and fuels, as companies strive to meet the new standards. Additionally, there may be further updates and revisions to the regulations as the EU continues to refine its approach to reducing emissions. The industry will need to stay informed and agile to respond to these changes effectively.
