What's Happening?
South African Airways (SAA) is actively expanding its codeshare partnerships to enhance its network reach and is planning to grow its fleet of widebody aircraft by 2026. At the African Airlines Association
annual meeting in Luanda, Angola, SAA signed a codeshare deal with TAAG, allowing SAA to add its flight code to TAAG-operated flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Luanda. In return, TAAG gains access to destinations in SAA's network, including Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Harare, and Lusaka. SAA, which resumed operations in September 2021 after near bankruptcy, is in a rebuilding phase and aims to increase its aircraft capacity. The airline currently operates a fleet of 14 Airbus A320 narrowbodies, two A340-300s, and two A330-300 widebodies. SAA has leased four additional A320s this year, with plans for more aircraft in 2026.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of SAA's codeshare partnerships and fleet is significant for the airline's recovery and growth strategy. By increasing its network reach and aircraft capacity, SAA aims to strengthen its position in the competitive aviation market. The codeshare agreements with airlines like TAAG, Turkish Airlines, and others will enhance connectivity and offer more travel options to passengers. This move is crucial for SAA to regain its market share and improve its financial stability after the challenges faced during the pandemic. The planned fleet growth will also support SAA's long-term strategy to expand its long-haul network, potentially increasing its presence in international markets.
What's Next?
SAA plans to continue signing additional codeshare agreements in the coming year, with potential deals involving Air Botswana, Air Zimbabwe, Air Eswatini, and United Airlines. The airline is also expected to issue a request for proposals for a significant number of narrowbodies and widebodies before the end of the year. This expansion will likely lead to increased competition in the African aviation market, as SAA aims to enhance its connectivity and service offerings. The airline's focus on fleet renewal and network expansion indicates a strategic shift towards becoming a more competitive and resilient carrier.
