What's Happening?
The Guernsey Ambulance and Rescue Service is encouraging residents to subscribe to its service to avoid high costs associated with emergency call-outs. According to Chief Ambulance Officer Mark Mapp, more
than a quarter of the service's users last year did not have subscription cover, leading to potential 'bill shock' due to the high cost of ambulance services, which can exceed £550 per call-out. The annual subscription costs £71 per adult and £33 per child, providing coverage for emergency ambulance and transfer services. The service is operated by St John on behalf of the States of Guernsey, with funding supplemented by subscriptions and charges.
Why It's Important?
The push for subscription sign-ups is significant as it highlights the financial burden emergency services can impose on individuals without coverage. By subscribing, residents can mitigate unexpected expenses, ensuring they have access to necessary services without financial strain. This initiative also underscores the importance of sustainable funding models for public services, as the ambulance service relies on subscriptions to cover operational costs not met by government grants. The move could lead to increased financial security for residents and more stable funding for the service.
