What's Happening?
Leading shipping companies have formed the Maritime Association for Clean Seas (MACS) to address ocean plastic pollution. Founded by Seven Clean Seas, MACS unites industry leaders like Berge Bulk and X-Press
Feeders to drive reductions in plastic and operational waste. The initiative focuses on sustainable procurement, vessel waste measurement, and improved portside waste reception. MACS aims to advance best practices and innovation across the maritime value chain, aligning with the IMO's Plastic Marine Litter Action Plan. The association seeks to recover 100 million kilograms of plastic and improve 200,000 lives by 2030.
Why It's Important?
The formation of MACS represents a significant step in addressing environmental concerns within the maritime industry. By uniting major players, the initiative aims to reduce plastic leakage and protect marine ecosystems. This collaborative effort not only addresses environmental issues but also sets a precedent for industry-wide action. The focus on sustainable practices and waste reduction aligns with global environmental goals, potentially influencing other sectors with larger plastic footprints. The initiative highlights the maritime industry's role in environmental stewardship and its potential to inspire broader change.
What's Next?
MACS plans to focus on three key areas in 2026: sustainable procurement, vessel waste measurement, and improved portside waste reception. These efforts are part of a larger mission to recover significant amounts of ocean plastic and improve community impacts. The association will continue to develop certified recovery projects in polluted coastal regions, aiming to deliver fair employment and community benefits. As scrutiny around environmental impact intensifies, MACS will serve as a unified front for maritime players to inspire change across adjacent sectors.
