What's Happening?
Boston Harbor Shipyard & Marina (BHSM) has successfully completed a multi-barge roll-on operation using its 500-ton floating dry dock, 'Providence.' This operation marks the first of the new year and involved the construction and launch of barges intended
for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) ferry terminal at the Hingham shipyard. The barges, each measuring 115 feet by 30 feet and weighing approximately 120 tons, were fabricated by Blue Atlantic Fabricators, a tenant of BHSM. The project, awarded in February 2025, aims to enhance rider experience and comply with updated accessibility standards. The operation was a collaborative effort involving several partners, including Bay Crane, ACK Marine, and JMS Naval Architects, ensuring a safe and efficient launch process.
Why It's Important?
The successful launch of these barges is significant for Massachusetts' ongoing investment in water transportation infrastructure. By improving the MBTA ferry terminal, the project is expected to enhance commuter experience and accessibility, potentially increasing the use of ferry services. This development also highlights the importance of collaboration among shipbuilders, heavy-lift specialists, and naval architects in achieving complex engineering tasks. The project underscores the state's commitment to modernizing transportation facilities, which could have broader economic benefits by facilitating smoother and more efficient transit options for residents and visitors.
What's Next?
As Massachusetts continues to invest in its water transportation infrastructure, similar projects may be undertaken to further enhance the state's transit systems. The successful completion of this operation sets a precedent for future collaborations and engineering projects. Stakeholders, including the MBTA and local government, may explore additional opportunities to improve and expand ferry services, potentially leading to increased ridership and reduced traffic congestion on roadways.
