What's Happening?
The City of Deshler, Nebraska, has been recertified in the state's Leadership Certified Community (LCC) program, recognizing its significant local business and community investments in childcare facilities and a county-wide workforce housing initiative.
LCC Program Director Kelly Gewecke presented the award to village and county officials. Deshler, which first earned LCC status in 2021, is one of 29 Nebraska communities in the program, established by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development in 2011. The program encourages communities to adapt to economic development changes, support new and expanding businesses, and prioritize childcare, housing, and workforce development. Deshler's efforts include a $470,000 community-wide capital campaign for Spring Creek Kids, Inc., a 5,000-square-foot non-profit childcare center, and a workforce housing initiative that developed new homes and an eight-plex apartment building.
Why It's Important?
Deshler's recertification in the LCC program highlights a successful model for rural community development in the U.S., particularly in addressing critical issues like childcare and workforce housing shortages. These initiatives are vital for attracting and retaining families and workers, which in turn supports local businesses and economic growth. The collaboration between local businesses, community members, and state programs like Communities for Kids (C4K) demonstrates how strategic partnerships can lead to tangible improvements in quality of life and economic vitality. This success story provides a blueprint for other rural communities facing similar challenges, showcasing the importance of proactive planning, community investment, and leveraging state resources to create sustainable growth and opportunity.
What's Next?
With its recertification, Deshler will continue to benefit from its LCC status for another five years, maintaining its focus on economic development, childcare, housing, and workforce initiatives. The community is expected to further develop its online presence to market local opportunities and attract new residents and businesses. The success of Spring Creek Kids, Inc. and the workforce housing projects may inspire additional investments and expansions in these areas. Deshler's ongoing participation in programs like C4K will likely lead to continued support for childcare affordability and capacity. This sustained effort aims to ensure Deshler remains a vibrant and attractive community for families and businesses in Nebraska.
Beyond the Headlines
Deshler's achievement in the Leadership Certified Community program reflects a broader national challenge and opportunity for rural America. Many small towns struggle with population decline, aging infrastructure, and a lack of essential services like quality childcare and affordable housing. Deshler's proactive and collaborative approach demonstrates that these challenges are not insurmountable. By prioritizing community-led initiatives and leveraging state support, Deshler is not just surviving but thriving. This model underscores the importance of local agency and tailored solutions, rather than one-size-fits-all approaches, for rural revitalization. It also highlights the critical role of public-private partnerships in fostering sustainable development and creating resilient communities that can adapt to economic shifts and demographic changes, ultimately contributing to the overall strength of the U.S. economy and social fabric.
