A proposed mission concept suggests that a laser-driven sail carrying a gram-scale probe could reach Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system, in just over 20 years. This concept, known as Breakthrough Starshot, involves using a high-output laser array
to accelerate an ultrathin reflective sail to about one-fifth of light speed. The mission aims to demonstrate the feasibility of interstellar travel by separating the energy source from the vehicle, allowing the probe to coast across space without carrying fuel.
