Arika Kundu, a 13-year-old student from Minnesota, has developed an innovative method to reduce pesticide residues on fresh produce using peanut shells. Her project, titled 'LIGNEX', utilizes a biosorption process to convert agricultural waste into a material
that can trap pesticide residues. This method not only addresses the issue of pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables but also provides a sustainable use for peanut shells, which are typically discarded. Arika's project has earned her a spot as a finalist in the 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge, a national competition that encourages middle school students to develop science-based solutions for real-world problems. As a finalist, she will work with a 3M scientist over the summer and compete for a $25,000 prize in October.

Arika's future plans include pursuing a career in astrobiology, with a focus on reducing radiation exposure during space travel, which could have implications for cancer treatment and other fields.
