What's Happening?
Intermountain Health has announced plans to transform the nine-story Fairbourne Building in West Valley City, Utah, into a comprehensive medical campus. The organization acquired the approximately 220,000-square-foot
building, located at 3535 Market Street, from Wasatch Group. This new Intermountain Health Fairbourne Campus aims to provide a wide range of outpatient and specialty services, bringing healthcare closer to residents in west Salt Lake County. Services are expected to begin opening in early 2027 and will include medical oncology, infusion care, primary care sports medicine, neurology, and cardiac rehabilitation. Additional planned services encompass advanced imaging, laboratory and pharmacy support, ambulatory and surgical care, endoscopy, orthopedics, rheumatology, rehabilitation, and various specialty physician clinics. The first floor is slated to feature imaging services and a future freestanding emergency department, affiliated with Intermountain LDS Hospital, which is anticipated to open later in 2027. This new campus will complement Intermountain’s existing West Valley Clinic, which will continue to offer primary care, family medicine, pediatrics, and urgent care services.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the Intermountain Health Fairbourne Campus is a significant development for healthcare access in West Valley City and west Salt Lake County, one of Utah’s fastest-growing communities. Currently, many residents in these areas must travel to other parts of the Salt Lake Valley for specialty or hospital outpatient care. This travel can create substantial barriers for patients, impacting their ability to balance work, transportation, childcare, and ongoing medical treatments. By bringing a broad spectrum of services, including oncology, infusion, imaging, and rehabilitation, closer to home, the new campus will reduce travel times, make appointments easier to keep, and facilitate more coordinated care in a single location. This initiative addresses a critical need for convenient, high-quality healthcare services, potentially improving health outcomes and patient satisfaction for thousands of residents. The repurposing of an existing building also demonstrates a thoughtful use of healthcare resources and allows for quicker expansion of access.
What's Next?
The Intermountain Health Fairbourne Campus is scheduled to begin opening its doors in early 2027, with initial services including medical oncology, infusion care, primary care sports medicine, neurology, and cardiac rehabilitation. The freestanding emergency department, affiliated with Intermountain LDS Hospital, is expected to open later in 2027. The campus design includes several floors available for future development, allowing Intermountain Health to expand its offerings over time in response to the community's evolving healthcare needs. This phased approach suggests a continuous assessment of local demand and a commitment to long-term growth. Residents can anticipate a gradual increase in available services throughout 2027 and beyond, as Intermountain Health works to fully establish the campus as a comprehensive medical hub for West Valley City and west Salt Lake County.
Beyond the Headlines
This project highlights a growing trend in healthcare delivery: the decentralization of specialized medical services to bring them closer to patient populations, particularly in rapidly expanding suburban and exurban areas. By converting an existing structure into a medical campus, Intermountain Health is not only addressing immediate access needs but also demonstrating a sustainable approach to infrastructure development, potentially reducing construction timelines and environmental impact compared to building entirely new facilities. The integration of various outpatient and specialty services under one roof reflects a move towards more coordinated and patient-centric care models, which can lead to better health outcomes and a more streamlined patient experience. This strategy could serve as a model for other healthcare systems looking to expand their reach efficiently and effectively in underserved or growing communities across the U.S.
