Recent research conducted by the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) has revealed that excess weight may be responsible for more than one in ten cancer cases, nearly doubling previous estimates. The study, published in Cancer Communications, analyzed
health data from 458,543 participants in the UK Biobank over a median period of nearly 12 years, during which over 50,000 new cancer cases were recorded. The researchers found that traditional methods of measuring obesity, such as body mass index (BMI), may underestimate the risk, as they do not account for fat distribution. Instead, measures like waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio, which better capture abdominal fat, were found to be more informative. Abdominal fat is metabolically active and linked to inflammation, which can promote tumor development. The study also addressed potential biases in previous research by excluding early years of participant data to avoid distortion from pre-existing cancers.
