What's Happening?
The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has approved a US$100,000 grant to support a feasibility study for a Regional Stock Exchange within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). This initiative, in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)
and the CARICOM Private Sector Organization Inc. (CPSO), aims to assess the potential for a more integrated capital market across CARICOM Member States. The study will explore legal and regulatory requirements, evaluate international stock exchange models, and engage stakeholders from both public and private sectors. The goal is to improve access to financing, particularly for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and to enhance economic resilience and competitiveness in the region.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of a Regional Stock Exchange could significantly impact the Caribbean's economic landscape by facilitating greater market integration and unlocking new sources of financing. This could lead to increased investment opportunities and economic growth, particularly benefiting MSMEs and traditionally underserved groups such as women-led enterprises and youth entrepreneurs. The initiative aligns with CDB's strategic objectives of building economic resilience and promoting private sector development, which are crucial for the region's long-term growth and stability.
What's Next?
Upon completion of the feasibility study, findings will be presented at a regional symposium to provide evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, regulators, and private sector stakeholders. This will guide decisions on the future of regional capital market integration. The project supports regional efforts to strengthen financial markets and advance Caribbean integration, potentially leading to the establishment of a more connected and efficient regional capital market.
