Electra recently demonstrated its hybrid-electric short-takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft in Philadelphia, showcasing technology that could revolutionize regional air travel. The small yellow aircraft, which operates on conventional aviation fuels and has
charging capabilities, requires only 150 feet for takeoff and landing. This capability allows it to utilize smaller landing sites, potentially bypassing traditional airports. The demonstration took place at the Tioga Marine Terminal, where state and local officials observed the aircraft's flight and landing. JP Stewart, Senior Vice President for Product Development at Electra, highlighted that this technology could create new point-to-point routes by leveraging underutilized infrastructure. The company envisions trips such as Philadelphia to State College or Atlantic City to New York, with a projected New York to Washington, D.C. trip costing $250 and taking approximately one hour and 45 minutes. The smaller EL2 aircraft is currently conducting these demonstration flights to collect technical data, while the flagship EL9 nine-passenger aircraft is intended for primary service.
