What's Happening?
NASA has inaugurated its first new wind tunnel in over 40 years at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. The Flight Dynamics Research Facility (FDRF) features a 131-foot building equipped with four 14-foot fans, each powered by 750-horsepower
motors, designed to push air vertically through the chamber. This new facility replaces two older tunnels from 1939 and 1941, offering enhanced capabilities with a test section measuring 20 feet in diameter and 24 feet tall. The FDRF is designed to support various aerodynamic tests, including free flight, forced oscillation, and flow visualization, providing cleaner data for research and development.
