What's Happening?
The Agriculture Ministry is advancing climate-smart agriculture through Juncao Technology, which strengthens rural livelihoods and boosts food security. The initiative has expanded from Papua New Guinea
to Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga, and the Federated States of Micronesia. Since 2014, Fiji's Juncao Technology Demonstration Centre has introduced mushroom species and Giant Juncao Grass varieties, focusing on training farmers and government officers. Current efforts aim to commercialize production, improve livestock feed, empower women and youth, and restore soil.
Why It's Important?
Juncao Technology reduces Fiji's mushroom imports, strengthens food system resilience, lowers carbon emissions, and complements traditional farming. The program has trained technicians and provided hands-on experience to students, signaling strong regional commitment to sustainable agriculture and climate adaptation. This initiative supports regional resilience and sustainable development, addressing poverty, climate change, and infrastructure resilience.
