What's Happening?
The Maddy Institute, a nonpartisan public policy institute based at Fresno State, is playing a pivotal role in preparing students for careers in public service. Founded in 1999 in honor of Senator Ken Maddy, the institute partners with regional universities
to offer internships that provide hands-on experience in legislative offices and government agencies. The Jim Costa Legislative Internship Program, in particular, has been instrumental in placing students in significant roles, such as in the offices of U.S. Representatives and other government bodies. Alumni of the program, like Tracey Chow and Steven Kemp, have credited their internships with shaping their careers in federal politics and public administration. The institute also engages in community education on policy issues, hosting events like gubernatorial candidate forums and legislative bill summaries.

The Maddy Institute's efforts are crucial in fostering a new generation of policy leaders from the Central Valley, an area often underrepresented in state and federal politics.
