What's Happening?
A museum in Cumbria is calling for the public to lend memorabilia related to working men's clubs for a new photography exhibition. The exhibition, titled 'Club Culture Cumbria,' will be displayed at The Armitt
in Ambleside starting February 2026. Photographer Colin Potsig, who began capturing portraits of regulars at these clubs two years ago, is expanding his project to include Cumbria. The museum is interested in collecting items such as beer mugs, photographs, and videos that tell the stories of these clubs. The initiative aims to highlight the cultural significance of these clubs, which are increasingly disappearing or being repurposed. The Armitt's manager, Faye Morrissey, emphasized the importance of these objects in sharing the history and stories of the clubs.
Why It's Important?
The exhibition and call for memorabilia underscore the cultural and historical importance of working men's clubs in Cumbria. These clubs have traditionally served as social hubs for communities, offering a space for camaraderie and leisure. However, many are now struggling to survive, with some being demolished or repurposed. By collecting and displaying these items, the museum aims to preserve the legacy and stories of these clubs, drawing attention to their role in community life. This initiative not only preserves cultural heritage but also raises awareness about the challenges faced by such institutions in modern times.
What's Next?
The museum will continue to collect memorabilia throughout January and February, with the exhibition set to open in February 2026. The success of this initiative could inspire similar efforts to preserve other cultural institutions facing decline. The exhibition may also prompt discussions on how to support and revitalize these clubs, potentially leading to community-driven efforts to preserve them.
