A study conducted by specialists from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases has found a connection between healthy eating patterns and slower biological aging, as indicated by epigenetic markers. The research, published in the journal Nature
Communications, analyzed data from approximately 7,500 adults, with the main analysis on 6,470 individuals from the Bonn area and validation on an independent group of 1,034. Researchers assessed adherence to ten different healthy eating patterns, including Mediterranean, Nordic, DASH, and plant-based diets, and compared these with markers of epigenetic aging, which are changes in DNA methylation that affect gene activity and accumulate with age. The study revealed that higher adherence to all examined healthy eating patterns was associated with lower rates of epigenetic aging. While the severity of this relationship varied among individual diet options, the differences were relatively small. The researchers analyzed about 850,000 DNA sections and found that although different dietary patterns showed unique methylation changes, over 70% of the affected biological pathways, primarily related to cellular structure, signal transmission, and metabolism, intersected.
