Gabriela Baeza Ventura has been promoted to director of Arte Público Press, taking over from Nicolàs Kanellos, the founding director who has stepped down. Kanellos established the press in 1979 at the University of Houston, and it has grown to become the largest publisher of Latino authors in the United States. Kanellos was recognized with a National Humanities Medal last year for his contributions to Hispanic publishing. Baeza Ventura has been with the press for over two decades, starting as a research assistant while pursuing her doctorate in Spanish at the University of Houston. She has held various roles, including managing editor and executive editor, before becoming deputy director in 2023.
