What's Happening?
Sunshine Sips, a new venture by the nonprofit A Latte Opportunities, is set to open in Gulfport, Mississippi, on October 1st. This initiative aims to provide job training for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The first group
of 10 interns is scheduled to begin training on September 8th. Sunshine Sips will be located inside the Mississippi Antique Galleria. The nonprofit grew out of the closure of a previous coffee shop, A Latte Friends, with community support enabling the continuation of its mission to create inclusive employment opportunities. Currently, A Latte Opportunities is operating a mobile cart at community events until the physical shop opens.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is critically important as it addresses a significant employment gap for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Nationally, only 23.5% of people with IDD accessing employment supports were working in integrated settings, highlighting a substantial need for more inclusive opportunities. Sunshine Sips provides a structured training program that not only teaches valuable workplace skills but also builds confidence and fosters community integration for its interns. By partnering with the Mississippi Antique Galleria, the program offers a real-world environment for learning and potential future employment. This effort contributes to a more equitable and inclusive society by empowering individuals with IDD to achieve greater independence and participate actively in the workforce.
What's Next?
The first group of 10 interns will begin their training on September 8th, leading up to the official opening of Sunshine Sips on October 1st inside the Mississippi Antique Galleria. A Latte Opportunities plans to offer two 12-week training programs annually, one in the fall and one in the spring, combining workplace training with community volunteer opportunities. The nonprofit will continue to operate its mobile drink cart at community events until the shop opens, serving as a visible presence and a way to engage with the community. The success of Sunshine Sips could serve as a model for other communities looking to create similar inclusive employment programs for individuals with disabilities.
