New research presented at the ESC Cardiology Congress in Germany suggests that higher levels of the popular artificial sweetener xylitol in the blood are associated with an increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including heart
attack and stroke. Xylitol, a sugar alcohol commonly used as a low-calorie sweetener in foods, drinks, chewing gum, and dental products, was the focus of two large study cohorts involving over 17,700 Canadian and British participants. Over a six-year follow-up, individuals in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging with the highest xylitol levels had a 57% higher risk of death, myocardial infarction, or stroke related to cardiovascular events compared to those with the lowest levels. Similarly, participants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC)-Norfolk group with the highest xylitol levels showed an 18% greater risk of MACE over 30 years. Both cohorts demonstrated a dose-dependent association, where higher blood xylitol concentrations correlated with higher rates of cardiovascular events, even after adjusting for other risk factors like age, gender, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, and lipid levels.
