What's Happening?
The Racial Equity in Journalism (REJ) Fund, established in 2019 and housed at Borealis Philanthropy, is dedicated to supporting journalism in communities of color across the United States. The fund aims to address the funding gap in journalism, particularly
for local, independent news organizations serving Black, Indigenous, Latine, Asian, and Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) communities. It has awarded over $24 million in grants to various organizations, including Documented and The Atlanta Voice. The REJ Fund's support is crucial in combating misinformation and disinformation targeted at these communities, promoting accurate representation, and enhancing civic engagement. Despite its success, the fund faces challenges due to federal funding cuts and political pushback against race-based programming.
Why It's Important?
The REJ Fund plays a vital role in sustaining independent news organizations that serve underrepresented communities, which are often overlooked by mainstream media. By providing financial support, the fund helps these organizations maintain operations and continue delivering accurate information, which is essential for informed decision-making and democratic participation. The fund's efforts also counteract the historical disinvestment in businesses led by people of color, promoting economic equity. Furthermore, by supporting these newsrooms, the REJ Fund helps uphold democracy by ensuring diverse voices are heard and reducing the spread of harmful narratives and misinformation.
What's Next?
The REJ Fund is preparing to publish a retrospective of its work over the past five years, highlighting lessons learned and sustainability practices. It plans to launch revenue experimentation grantmaking and explore endowment strategies for journalism. The fund aims to balance stability and experimentation to support the growth of news organizations. A key focus will be on finding ways for these organizations to achieve financial independence from philanthropy, ensuring long-term sustainability. The fund will continue to navigate challenges posed by political and funding shifts, seeking to maintain and expand its support for journalism in communities of color.
