What's Happening?
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland has launched a new initiative to offer free pastoral care to activists working against gender-based violence. This service, in partnership with the Ólöf Tara Memorial Fund, aims to support those facing emotional
strain from advocacy work, particularly the pressures of online harassment. The program, introduced at the recent SlutWalk march, is set to begin in early August and is open to all, regardless of faith or gender. The initiative addresses a critical gap in support for activists, many of whom struggle to access psychological services due to long waiting lists and high costs. The church's involvement, led by Reverend Laufey Brá Jónsdóttir, emphasizes confidentiality and a non-religious approach to care.
Why It's Important?
This initiative highlights the growing recognition of the emotional toll that advocacy work can take on individuals, particularly in the realm of gender-based violence. By providing free and confidential support, the church is addressing a significant need for mental health resources among activists. This move could set a precedent for other organizations to offer similar support, acknowledging the importance of mental health care in sustaining long-term advocacy efforts. The program also underscores the role of religious institutions in providing community support beyond traditional faith-based services, potentially influencing how other organizations approach social activism support.
