Consumer Reports' food safety scientists have conducted a study revealing potentially harmful chemical contaminants in 14 out of 21 packaged snack products marketed to or commonly consumed by children. The chemicals identified include acrylamide and phthalates.
Acrylamide, a probable human carcinogen based on animal studies, forms naturally in some foods during high-temperature cooking and processing, and was found in granola bars, chips, pretzels, and graham crackers. Phthalates, linked to potential long-term health risks including interference with natural hormones, can migrate into food from packaging and manufacturing materials. These were detected in Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies Original, Chocolate Chip Z Bars, and Slim Jim Mild Snack Size Sticks. While some exposure to contaminants is unavoidable, Consumer Reports emphasizes the responsibility of manufacturers and regulators to reduce these substances before products reach consumers. Seven products tested were below CR’s level of concern in all tests, including Pirate’s Booty cheese puffs, Welch’s fruit snacks, and Frigo string cheese.
