What's Happening?
EveryLibrary, a political action committee founded in 2012, has published its 2025 annual impact report. The report outlines the organization's recent initiatives to promote pro-library legislation and
foster coalition-building in support of librarianship. Over the past year, EveryLibrary has expanded its network to include 175,000 new users, reaching a total of approximately 575,000 advocates. A significant campaign in 2025 involved defending the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) against a White House executive order that threatened its existence. EveryLibrary mobilized over a quarter million people to support the IMLS by emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rule of law. Additionally, the organization has grown its National Library Alliance, which now includes 14 organizations such as Right to Read Alabama and Freedom to Read Projects in several states.
Why It's Important?
The efforts of EveryLibrary are crucial in safeguarding the future of public libraries and ensuring access to information. By advocating for pro-library legislation and supporting grassroots organizations, EveryLibrary plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity and funding of libraries across the United States. The organization's campaigns, such as the defense of the IMLS, highlight the importance of federal support for libraries, which are essential for education and community engagement. Furthermore, EveryLibrary's focus on First Amendment rights and civil rights in reading underscores the broader societal impact of libraries as centers for free expression and diversity. The expansion of the National Library Alliance strengthens the collective voice of library advocates, potentially influencing public policy and funding decisions.
What's Next?
Looking ahead, EveryLibrary plans to continue its advocacy efforts by focusing on effective lobbying for library funding and expanding its Fight for the First campaign. The organization aims to emphasize the civil rights aspect of reading, drawing on the Civil Rights Act to support new frameworks for collection development that prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion. EveryLibrary intends to further increase its network and fundraising capabilities, positioning itself as a key supporter of libraries and the communities they serve. By centering the humanity of the reader and the ethical duty of collection development, EveryLibrary seeks to ensure that libraries remain inclusive and representative spaces.
